Cancer Council Queensland and the Queensland Government are excited to support the SunSmart Shade Creation Initiative 2024. If your organisation meets our eligibility criteria listed below, we highly encourage you to take the time to apply and reduce skin cancer rates in Queensland.

Our experience shows that groups who plan early often submit higher quality applications, increasing their chance of being a successful recipient. Below is a summary of steps to follow once the applications open.
Is your organisation eligible?
Are you a Queensland not-for-profit organisation that caters for 0-18 year olds in the following areas;
- early childhood education and care facilities
- state primary and secondary schools
- junior sporting organisations
- Your organisation did not receive funding for shade through the SunSmart Shade Creation Initiative in the last two years.
- Located within the Queensland Hospital and Health Service regions of Townsville, Cairns and Hinterland, and North West. This covers 21 Local Government Areas in the north and west of Queensland from Douglas Shire down to Burdekin Shire and out to Mount Isa. Hospital and Health Service Map
What steps does my organisation need to take to apply?
- Create a user account with SurveyMonkey Apply by clicking on the ‘Apply Now’ button *You can save and edit your application form as you go
- If you are a primary school, outside hours care service or early childhood centre, join or renew your membership to the National SunSmart program www.cancerqld.org.au/sunsmart
- Ensure your organisation has the following:
- Funding to cover remaining project costs
- Have a copy of your current sun protection policy
- Have 2 quotes
- Have a letter of support on organisational letterhead
- Have a copy of either your registered/incorporated entity certificate or Australian Business Register search results
- Have proof of your not-for-profit status
- Have a photo or diagram to clearly show where your shade will be located
What you can apply for:
- Permanent hard roofed structure
Judging considerations
- Application has been submitted on time with all required documentation and information provided.
- Your organisation meets the eligibility criteria
- Justification for funding and proposed use of shade structure has been provided.
- The organisation shows a commitment towards implementing sun safety actions.
- Only groups located within the Townsville, Cairns and Hinterland, and North West Hospital and Health Service Regions will be eligible for funding, and SEIFA and RA scoring systems will be taken into consideration. Not-for-profit organisations across 21 Local Government Areas in the north and west of Queensland from Douglas Shire down to Burdekin Shire and out to Mount Isa are eligible.
